Sustainable Coffee Pod Packaging

Web Design
Overview

Redesigning coffee pod packaging in local grocery stores so that it is more environmentally friendly for users to recycle their used coffee pods.

The Problem

There is a lack of knowledge about how to dispose of or recycle coffee pods, resulting in unnecessary waste that fills the earth with more non-recyclable materials.

The Goal

To simplify and ease the recycling process of coffee pods while educating people about recycling and having a greener mindset.

Tools Used

Illustrator, Adobe XD, Photoshop

Persona

Interviewees shared their thoughts and experiences with recycling coffee pod products which framed the direction of the project.

User Journey Map

My goal is to discover and visualize the user’s interaction with the packaging and website from the beginning to the end.

Paper Wireframes

Upon testing, users preferred landing page no.4 because of its contrast, as it caught their attention more.

Low-Fidelity Prototype

The prototype will help me learn more about users' thoughts and feedback regarding the interaction with the content as they explore the prototype.

Usability Study: Findings

I conducted user tests with people who shop online for coffee products to determine their thoughts and feelings about the web & package prototype

Round 1 findings

Coffee quiz:
As soon as the user completed the quiz, he wanted to see an actual image of the final product.

Product registry tool:
The user was searching for a tool to register product purchases to earn points.

Reward history:
The user wants to see how they’ve been rewarded so adding a history to the rewards bar would help with that.

Round 2 findings

QR code section:
On the packaging page, a barcode option would have been helpful in directing customers to the feature.

Product detail page:
The user wanted to see the number of capsules he could select.

Packaging:
Users prefer to see the informational content first and the directions/instructions at the back.

Key Takeaways

Impact

With the packaging and website, users can register and recycle their packaging and discover various ways of properly disposing of or recycling coffee pods.

What I learned

Coffee pod disposal is not something that most people think about or know about until they ask or read recycling instructions on packaging, which many say is not often.

With more time and resources

Next Step

To design a mobile version of the website to make it more accessible and easier for users to register their coffee products.

Next Step

  • Utilize QR codes in packaging and advertisements to show users the negative ecological effects of improper coffee pod disposal.
  • Research ways to eliminate all plastic from coffee pods and make the whole product disposable and reusable.
